2/07/2010: Inspiration and Influence

Below are the leathers from which my patches are going to be made. The artwork is not mine; these are merely test stamps.

The “rust” colored leather supplied by the label development company (on the right) is fairly standard fare. However, I was dead set on using “blond” colored leather as I want my artwork to pop boldly against the denim. So I purchased a very nice leather slab from a leather shop in San Francisco. With regard to my choice, aside from it having the desired color and thickness/body, what stood out most to me was its texture. Its surface doesn’t have a sheen like most leathers. Instead, the texture could be best described as sort of an ultra fine suede–pretty interesting looking.

As for thread, I’m undecided as to which color pallet I’m going to offer for 2010. In addition to my signature thread colors (1970 and 78’), I’m experimenting with another, more subdued color scheme. The correct choice should be more apparent once I’m done sampling. The final decision will depend on which pallet works best with the denim.

If I’m having a difficult time deciding however, then I may post photos of each sample in order to let viewers decide. I’d take opinions over the course of one month. The color scheme that gets the most votes goes into production. That’s an idea…

A word on inspiration and influence…

Inspiration is the genesis of any creative expression. oneculture is not the standard Levi’s/work wear inspired raw denim brand. I draw inspiration from all over the place. I tend not to be inspired by things themselves so much as I am by interesting aspects of things…peripheral aspects that have the ability to affect emotions.

For example, I’m highly inspired and influenced by visionaries—those people possessing unusually keen foresight, whose ideas leave lasting impacts. To that extent, as a business venture, I’d have to admit that oneculture has been influenced more so by film than by other denim brands.

As one example, one of my all time favorite films is Tobe Hooper’s 1974 classic “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”. What began in 1973 as nothing more than a grainy, little low budget, independent horror flick eventually became without question one of the most influential horror films of all time. “Texas…”, like “The Exorcist” before it, even caused some terrified theater goers to walk out before finishing the film—now that’s badass, ha ha!!! I’m downright awestruck by the sheer power of what Tobe Hooper was able to achieve with nothing more than a fresh idea and a vision.

Another one of my heroes is legendary film maker and creative Bay Area native, Russ Meyer. Although being highly sought after and well respected for his creative eye and thrifty attitude, he ignored “Hollywood” for the most part. “Sell-out” is the opposite of what he was! He opted instead to stay underground, producing his own low budget films that remained uncompromisingly true to his vision. He died a wealthy man, having managed to make a great living simply by choosing to do what he loved to do: tell his own stories on his own terms…a true badass! I find his passion to be quite contagious!!

With respects to art in general however, architecture is my first love (and, for whatever it’s worth, John Lautner is my favorite architect). Drafting was the only class I enjoyed during my high school years. Hence, with regard to denim design, I draw most of my inspiration from lines. Curved, straight or jagged, lines are everywhere you look. For instance, there’s something I find quite captivating about the outline of a woman’s curvaceous figure. Or, rather, those lines that form patterns, arcs or angles that sneakily seep into your subconscious and hold your attention.

For example, I’d purchased a Jockey brand thermal shirt back in 2004; the same year that I’d gotten the idea to produce jeans. Back then, I was still trying to create a signature look for my brand. And the angular “V” on the front of the shirt caught my eye. I thought that it was interesting looking; it definitely made the shirt look cooler than if it weren’t there. So I figured that I’d try and create a similar affect by placing a “V” in the yoke of my jeans. And that’s where I’d gotten the idea for “The Arrow”. Anyway…

Arrow Inspiration

I’ll talk more about inspiration later.  If I don’t stop here, this post will become a novel! I could literally type all day about the various people, places and things that, to some degree, have helped to shape my vision for oneculture. I just thought I’d take a moment in order to share what’s on my mind. I’ll keep you posted. Stay tuned!

1/28/2010: Round Three!

So, I’m just now beginning to make a little progress here…

Over the past months, I must admit…I’ve simply been doing all that I can just to keep my rent paid! In the process however, miraculously, I was able to sock away enough dough to begin working on my third season: “The NEW Pulsar”. Things have finally moved beyond planning into a more tangible space. Now I can exhale–wheeew

After having spent weeks going back & forth with a graphic designer, the artwork for my leather patch has been completed. Continuing in the tradition of story-telling, my goal was to make a statement with a picture. And I’m beyond satisfied wit the results. I’ll explain everything in detail once production wraps for the season, which, by my estimates, won’t be for another 3 -4 months.  The patches themselves should be completed and in my possession in another couple of weeks.

The first edited draft of the new Pulsar pattern is due to be completed late next week. From there, I’ll begin sampling and holding fitting sessions. And this process will be repeated until the desired results are achieved. It’s countdown to round three! I’ll keep you all posted…stay tuned!!

12/22/09: Consumer Feedback

Mr. Men’s Style himself, Ryan Plett ([YOU_HAVE_BROKEN_THE_INTERNET]), completes his ensemble with oneculture’s PULSAR model.

From the looks of it, they seem to fit him very nicely. Upon being pressed for feedback this is part of what he had to share, “I think the rise is nicely lower than APC’s…I’ve had several people ask me what they are and where they could get them!

FYI, I’m still in the midst of planning my next production! I’m working very slowly, but steadily. When you’re working with very little resources (i.e. NO money!) there are lots & lots of critical decisions to consider. I have so many cool ideas. But, if you dig what I’ve done thus far, then whatever I decide to do for my next production, you’ll like it even more…pinky swear!! I’ll keep you all posted. Stay tuned!

11/1/09: Damage Control

I’ve been putting this off for a couple of weeks now. But I feel that I have an obligation to do some damage control here. So imagine this…

…imagine that it’s the day of your big housewarming party. You’ve planned everything perfectly—the guest list, the catering, the music, drinks etc, etc. But you’re still stressing out, hoping that everything goes well. Oh yea, and you’re pregnant. So whatever stress you’re feeling is amplified! Okay…

…so now imagine that a flood of *complete strangers* show up to your home an hour before your guests are due to arrive and begin devouring your refreshments! This is exactly how The Blues Jean Bar event played out. And it was all my fault.

Unbeknownst to me that I was not supposed to promote the event. I proudly arrived that night only to discover that I had *INFURIATED* the owner—yikes! Our respective points of view regarding the party had met at 90 degree angles. I was under the impression that it was gong to be a public event. So my line of thinking was, The Blues Jean Bar—>party—>public—>the more, the merrier—>great exposure! However, I don’t think that I’ve EVER been more wrong about anything before in my life! And I take total responsibility for the mix-up as I’d failed to communicate my ideas with the owner directly.

So I’d like to sincerely apologize to everyone who attended due to having seen the event advertised online. It wasn’t your fault that you came; it was mine. And if you felt that you were treated rudely or unfairly that night, please try to see things from the owner’s point of view—her party was ruined. So I think that you’d agree that her feelings were very valid. So again, I deeply apologize to the attendees.  Anyway…

Aside from all that, and back on the design front, I am in full-blown WARRIOR MODE! I am absolutely determined to make a supremely impressive statement for my third production run: season of the MICRONAUTS (part 1). That’s all that I’m willing to share about that for now…

Regarding my current season, the buyer for TBJB recently took the time in order to share more very positive customer feedback with me.  That makes my work worth while.  Your feedback-positive or negative–is invaluable to me.  Anyway…

I’ll keep you all posted.  stay tuned!

10/11/09: Sample Test Drive

Okay, the details are in. The Blues Jean Bar (San Francisco) is having a party on Thursday, October 22nd. I’ll be giving away some of the samples that I’ve compiled throughout the months. Keep in mind that samples are not perfect “ready for sale” models. However, if you’ve been curious, this would be the perfect opportunity to test drive oneculture rigid denim. So if you’re in or near San Francisco that evening, by all means stop by! By the way, the samples are size 32 which fit more like 34’s, or perhaps even 35’s…

Development for my next production will begin within the coming months. oneculture summer 2010: Season of the MICRONAUTS.

I’ll keep you all posted…stay tuned!

Rest in peace Donald Fisher–you did A TERRIFIC job!

9/28/09: Mission Accomplished

So the Blues Jean Bar held a private even for their VIP customers down at their San Jose/Santana Row location and I was invited. I jumped at the opportunity to be able to formally introduce my brand as well as to inform their consumer base about the joys of raw denim. I’m not a hard core “denim snob” or anything; to each his own. However, while I can definitely appreciate an authentically vintage looking pre-wash job, to me there’s nothing quite as pleasing as the feel of a fresh, crispy pair of rigid denim jeans. Specifically, I like how the rigidity helps define the legs. Additionally, the process of breaking in a pair of “raws” is quite satisfying. Anyway…I’ll cover this topic a bit more later. Back to the party…

The weather was warm and the night was pleasant. The DJ supplied a steady stream of upbeat contemporary cuts while people browsed, conversed and enjoyed snacks & fresh drinks. And, as mentioned above, I finally got the chance to provide information about my company to the Blues Jean Bar’s consumer base; an easy and pleasure-giving task. In addition, I also received invaluable feedback. For instance, I learned that Pulsar Slim-Tapered has emerged as the break out star of the season as it has outsold the other cuts. I’d expected Pulsar (regular straight leg) to lead the pack because it seems to be more of an all around “guys cut”. And while this may or may not be true, the figures don’t lie. Interesting…

The buyer/manager told me about a guy who’d visited the San Francisco store specifically in order to buy a pair of slim tapered Pulsars. He liked them so much that he later returned with his dad, who then bought himself a pair of regular straight leg Pulsars. I mean, this has got to be the greatest story ever!!! It had become my new favorite song, as I mentally replayed it over and over again during my drive home–music to my ears.

Whoever that guy was, if you’re reading this, I’d like to say THANKS, DUDE! Enjoy…

Another thing I looked forward to doing that night was meeting the company’s owner and founder, Lady Fuller. I’m always intrigued and inspired by other people’s start-up stories; especially other Bay Area locals. I’d read her story on line long before they began carrying my denim. So it was a pleasure to finally be able to look her in the eye, shake her hand and thank her for taking a chance on my obscure little brand. For me, the night was a mission accomplished.

By the way, they’re having another party in October at their San Francisco location. I’ll post the details when they become available to me. So if you’re near San Francisco that night, come visit! I’d love to meet you and share my plans for summer 2010. Trust me: if you like summer 09’, then you’ll love oneculture summer 2010! THAT, I wholeheartedly promise…

So…I’ve been wearing my first edition Pulsars (fall 08’) for the better part of 13 months and now the time has come for them to receive their first wash. They’ve endured warehouse work, camping, beach trips, car maintenance work, oil, sweating, sitting, standing, bending…you name it! I feel that the results are decent. Some denims “bleed” more than others and the Italian denim I used during my first season has faded rather nicely.

I’d begun putting loose change into my back pocket along with my wallet. The results: a hole! Sweet!! I did it deliberately in order to determine how much stress the denim could withstand.

I took a few “fit pics”. Keep in mind that I’m no fit model; I’m 6’2” and 230 lbs. The fit pics serve only to show what the possibilities are. The color change from pre to post wash was very slight. But, as you can tell from mine and Ian’s fit pics, the overall color change from new to now is rather drastic.

As I’ve mentioned before, for me, the possibility of breaking in a pair of “raws” is like receiving a hidden game along with your purchase—the “do it yourself” game. There’s something I find very rewarding about creating my own unique “wash” over time, with fades and tears that conform to my own body and lifestyle. On the other hand, most pre-wash jeans look unnatural and contrived, with rips, holes and fading in weird places, or just terrible looking fade work altogether (either far too much sanding and scraping or too little).

Some brands do have access to really good laundering facilities which are capable of achieving authentically well-worn looks. And I’m all for that! Again, I’m not hard core either way. I’d love to be able to offer pre-washed denim to those who prefer that style. But until I gain access to a really good laundering facility I’m not going to bother with it. There’s nothing worse than a bad pre-washed job! Anyway…

I’ll keep you all posted. Stay tuned!
